Broward Sheriff's Office Training Center Wins 2024 ENR Southeast Best Government/Public Building Award

SOCOTEC USA is proud to share that the Broward Sheriff’s Office Training Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has been awarded the 2024 ENR Southeast Best Government/Public Building Award. This recognition celebrates the project’s outstanding design, functionality, and commitment to sustainability.

The seven-story, 88,000-square-foot facility is more than a training center—it’s a space designed with purpose and precision. The building features offices, classrooms, fire rescue simulation labs, a rappel tower, firearm ranges, and a two-story memorial lobby honoring the 17 victims of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. The memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of law enforcement training and preparedness.

The training center also includes a 250-seat auditorium, a five-story, 700-space parking garage, and an open-to-above production floor concept that fosters collaboration across disciplines. A floating, three-story oak and steel staircase serves as a design focal point, adding both aesthetic value and functional efficiency.

Broward Sheriff’s Office Training Center

Sustainability & Resilience

The Broward Sheriff’s Office Training Center is designed to achieve LEED Gold Certification, incorporating cutting-edge sustainable practices and materials. The building employs green technologies that reduce energy consumption while enhancing operational efficiency. Its squared floor configurations and glass-walled offices maximize collaboration and daylighting, while durable finishes were chosen to meet the demands of a high-use environment.

During construction, the project overcame significant challenges, including material availability and costs, achieving $19 million in savings through value engineering. Despite operating within the tight security parameters of the Broward Sheriff’s Office campus, the project was delivered on schedule and within budget in May 2024.

SOCOTEC USA’s Energy & Sustainability team played a critical role in the project, providing LEED consulting services to guide its sustainable design and construction. This recognition is a reflection of the dedication and expertise of the entire project team.

A special congratulations to SOCOTEC team members Sofia Farah, Sourya Dutta, Ernesto Collazo, and Steve Samenski for their invaluable contributions to the success of this project.
